About Blu-ray Products
- What are Blu-ray discs?
-
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers.
The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs offers consumers an unprecedented HD experience.
The format also has support from all Hollywood studios and countless smaller studios as a successor to today's DVD format. Many studios are releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month.
- What is Region Coding?
-
As is the case with DVD, Blu-ray discs and players are "region-coded", according to the geographical area they were produced for. This is so that content providers (including the studios) can support different content, prices, release dates, etc., depending on the region.
Region A: includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.
Region B: includes most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.
Region C: contains the remaining central and south Asian countries including China and Russia. We supply US product, which is marked as either Region Code: A or Region Code: A/B/C (All). However, not all content providers enforce this region coding on the discs, so a large number of titles will play on any Blu-ray player, regardless of the region code marked on the product or the region-code of the Blu-ray player that they are played in. We refer to these as Multi-Region or Region-Free and customers who have non-US Blu-ray Players (or ones that have not been modified to play all regions), should take great care to order ONLY titles which are labelled as A/B/C or Multi-Region, otherwise they will be unable to play them.
Please Note: Our multi-region status only applies to the main feature and not to any supplemental or bonus features, digital copies, etc.
Here is a rough guide to how much product is region-free for each of the major movie studios:
Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios: Almost all are region-free.
Sony Pictures, Warner Bros.: Most are region-free.
Lionsgate, Walt Disney Pictures: Mixture of region-free and region-locked.
20th Century Fox: Almost all are region-locked. - Are Your Discs US or Canadian Versions?
-
All our discs are genuine US releases and not inferior Canadian versions.
